Acts of Kindness for our Earth

There are plenty of ways to make our Earth the recipient of our acts of kindness.  Here are some ideas to help us take care of our beautiful planet, go green and reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Buy locally – not only is it good for the local economy, it will save energy because products haven’t traveled far to get to you.
  • Walk, cycle, or use public transportation.  When using your car is unavoidable, try to carpool and also plan your route to avoid driving further than you have to.
  • Conserve fuel by turning down the heat at night and while you are away from your home or business – or install a programmable thermostat.Use energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Hang clothes to dry instead of using a dryer.
  • Insulate your home against heat loss and periodically check insulation.  Fix air leakage with weather-stripping and caulking.
  • In the winter, change your furnace air filters once a month. The heater uses more energy when it is full of dust.
  • Insulate your electric hot water heater and pipes. Be sure to avoid fire hazards and start insulating about 6 inches away from the heater. Do not insulate gas heaters.
  • Avoid anything battery operated (or use rechargeable or solar rechargeable batteries).
  • Install displacement toilet dams in toilet reservoirs. Placing water bottles or containers filled with stones in the toilet reservoir conserves water with each flush and makes a huge difference over the course of a year.
  • Scrape dishes instead of rinsing them before loading the dishwasher.
  • Take your own bags to the grocery store. If you take plastic bags, use them until they are worn out.
  • Before buying anything new, first check your local craigslist or other classified advertisements.  This can save you money and save space in the landfill.
  • Don’t buy bottled water. Carry a reusable water-bottle with you.
  • Compost your food waste and use as nutrient rich soil for your lawn.
  • Avoid excess packaging.
  • Always use reusables: mugs, lunch containers, batteries, pens, razors, etc.
  • Replace paper products with reusable ones (use recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper when you do have to use paper).
  • Print double-sided documents instead of single-sided ones.
  • Constantly be looking for more ways to be environmentally friendly and encourage those close to you to do the same.

There are so many little things we can do everyday to help sustain our world.  It’s easy, all we have to do is make the decision and follow through.  Every green act we perform is an act of kindness that we can feel good about doing for our planet.
